Signs That May Indicate That Your Furnace Needs To Be Repaired

As a homeowner, it is important to make sure that your furnace is always in perfect working order. After all, you would hate to see yourself and you family in a freezing cold house in the middle of winter because you missed some warning signs of furnace trouble. To help make sure that you are less likely to find yourself without heat, you are going to want to check out the following signs.

It Sounds Terrible

The furnace should never make so much noise that it is catching your attention. Sure, it might make a slight sound when it first kicks on, but unless the house is completely silent and you are really listening for it, you might never notice it. Therefore, if you are starting to hear a lot of banging, rattling, or vibration sounds, you need to call in a skilled HVAC technician. The sound that you are hearing could be a number of things. It could be anything from duct work starting to detach from the outside of the furnace to a fan motor starting to lock up.

The Temperature Is Always Lower Than It Should Be

Unless you have all of your windows open in the winter while you have the furnace running, you should be able to get the temperature in the house up to the temperature that you selected on the thermostat. If it always appears to be colder in the house than it should be, then this is a problem that you will want to discuss with a licensed HVAC technician. There could be a problem in the wiring within the furnace, the fan blower may not be working efficiently, or the thermostat itself is starting to malfunction and needs to be replaced.

The Pilot Light Keeps Going Out

The pilot light on your natural gas or propane furnace should always be on. The pilot on the furnace is not something that you should have to ignite very often. The only time you should have to do that is when you turned it off yourself in order to get closer to the internal parts of the furnace for an inspection or repair. Should you find that igniting the pilot is something that you are always doing, you will want to call in an HVAC expert. It could be something as simple as the ignition being too dirty to keep the flame going. It could be that the ignition itself is malfunctioning and needs to be replaced.

As you can see, there are some clear signs that you will want to keep an eye out for so that you can solve problems with your furnace before they get out of hand.
